In this Fox 34 Follow-up on those pesky weeds causing problems throughout Lubbock, we reveal how the city decides which areas demand immediate cutting and cleanup, and which ones can wait a bit.
Public safety is the determining factor. City Codes Director Stuart Walker said his inspectors carefully decide which properties require priority treatment. Thursday, the lucky parcel was at 17th Street and Peoria Avenue.
"If they are identified as an immediate health and safety hazard, we will basically pull those out of the normal process and get a contractor to go take care of them," Walker said. "But we do that on a case-by-case basis."
Walker said another factor aggravating the backup in weed cleanup is that he's short about five full-time inspectors and is also lacking outside contractors. He's trying to fill the positions.
