Families said farewell to summer at the Mae Simmons Center Saturday, for the 4th annual Back to School Kickoff. 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies such as pens, paper, rulers and even lunch boxes were given out.

Vendors were also on deck, such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Texas Agrilife, as well as Lubbock Park and Recreation.

"Especially in an economy like this, where sometimes it can be tough to get what you need for school, so it's always a good thing that we can provide free school supplies for the kids," said Amanda Eldridge, member of MADD and event coordinator.

The first day of class for most area school districts is Monday.
