Texas Tech is joining the international F-1 circuit...in a way.

The Tech Society of Automotive Engineers team unveiled it's Formula One style race car to sponsors, professors, and supporters Friday.

The car was completed from scratch for the 2013 International SAE Competition, which will take place at the Michigan International Speedway in May.

Matthew Candler, president of the Tech Formula SAE team, said the team finished the project five weeks ahead of schedule.

"In the previous years we've always finished in the last moments," Candler said, "and it's been hard to test the car. Now with five weeks of time, we can test the car and prepare it and that will allow us to place higher in Michigan."

The new race car features increased elbow room and a fitted seat. This will be the team's third year participating in the competition.
