A few years ago the J.I. Allison house was given to the city. It was moved from the Overton neighborhood to a property owned by Lubbock Power and Light. And that's where it sits, deteriorating due to the effects of weather and inattention.
It was a happening place back in the early 1950s. If walls could talk imagine the stories about the music written by Buddy Holly and Jerry Allison, the young talents who would usher in the rock and roll era.
"We want to highlight the musical heritage in Lubbock because that's what's made Lubbock since it was first started," says Phil Price with Civic Lubbock.
In the house, after returning from a night at the movies, Holly and Allison wrote one of their biggest hits, "That'll Be The Day".
"We want people, when they see the J. Allison house, to step back in time to 1954 or 1954," says Price. "Just what life was like, it was a simple time and we want to salute it."
It won't cost taxpayers anything to completely restore the house. Contractor Art Cuevas will see to that.
"I heard through the grapevine that the house had been moved from the Overton area to here and they were thinking of demolishing it and tearing it up," says Cuevas. So he wrote council members to propose an idea.
Cuevas contacted several other builders and explained the value and history behind the house and soon many were on board. If council gives approval the J.I. Allison house will be refurbished and relocated next to the Buddy Holly Center by Holly's 75th birthday next year.
