Lubbock City Council taking the first of two votes on an Atmos Energy rate increase.
Negotiations have continued since the rate increase was proposed in October. Atmos originally asked for an 11 percent hike.

The new proposed increase is 3 percent for Lubbock customers.
In settling for a smaller increase, Atmos could get it sooner and without the cost of fighting for a rate jump through other channels.

Council members voted unanimously to move it to the next vote/appeals process.
We worked on their behalf to hold the rates as low as we can, and Atmos has compromised also. So it's not as bad as it could have been." said Jim Gerlt, Councilman.
The second vote will have to take place before March 31st, if it passes, the increase will be effective April 7th.
