Texas Tech ranks among the nation's ten most underrated colleges, according to a study published this week by BusinessInsider.com.
The website's editors wanted to know how good the popular U.S. News and World Report College Rankings are at predicting future earnings. Did some colleges have poor reputations but excellent graduate salaries, (and vice-versa)?
To identify potentially underrated and overrated colleges, BusinessInsider.com plotted the U.S. News college rankings with PayScale.com's graduate salary rankings. The resulting disparities made up its "25 Most Underrated Colleges in America".
According to Payscale.com, Texas Tech graduates earn a mid-career salary of $86,700, good for 146th on a list of 1,058 colleges and universities. Meanwhile, Tech ranked 330th on a composite of U.S. News's exclusive lists of colleges and universities.
The difference between Tech's "college rank" and its "salary rank" is the sixth greatest in the nation, according to the study.
The only other Texas school on the BusinessInsider.com list is the University of Houston at number 15.
The University of Massachusetts in Lowell was ranked as the most underrated college.
