For Luis Calvillo getting a tractor to run properly again and look brand new is the mission he has whenever he has a tractor that looks like this show up at his home near Idalou.
But when Calvillo got started restoring tractors a few years ago the original plan was not to sell them but keep it for himself.
"When I got started I wanted a tractor that I could afford so I went and bought one at an auction," Calvillo said. "I started fixing it up and before I got done with it somebody wanted to buy it. So I sold it and then went and bought another one and started working on it, got it done and I parked it out here and somebody bought it."
Calvillo also restores trailers along with the tractors and the only time he has to work on the tractors and trailers is when he gets off work from his full time job.
Calvillo puts in about three to four weeks of work to get each tractor ready to put on display for a potential buyer to see and getting to park a finished tractor out on the road makes all the work worth it.
"Well it's just the finished product," Calvillo said. "I take pride in what I do and when I get done with it I turn around and look and say oh that's what I spend my extra time on on the weekends and the evenings and that's what I enjoy doing."
After a tractor is sold and the buyer comes to pick up the equipment Calvillo said he looks at the tractor as it is hauled away until he can't see it anymore but he enjoys the joy the refubished equipment brings to people.
"It's that story I told you earlier about that retired farmer, that as soon I got it off my trailer, he jumped on it and his wife was already out there with a camera taking pictures," Calvillo said. "We hadn't even gone around his house yet and he was already taking pictures of it and stuff like that. it's satisifying you know that he's getting something that he used to own, used to have and now he's getting a refurbished one."
Getting the tractors back up to prime condition takes a lot of work and Calvillo does it all in a shop behind his house, which is just big enough to get the job done.
"It's small right now I'm trying to build me another bigger place to where I can work with a lot of stuff inside and out of the weather and stuff. Right now I've got a smaller shop where I put them. It's dirty and crowded, but it works."
In three to five years calvillo says he has a lot of things he wants to get done in that time including building a bigger barn to work in and much more.
"Well I would like to have my own lot of tractors and trailers to where people can come to me and refurbish them or I can buy them and turn around and sell them, same with the trailers," Calvillo said. "Would like to have them all around here like I said I want to put a barn back over here where I can work on my stuff and have me an office so I can stay there and help the customers when they come by. "
It won't be long until Calvillo will have to start working on more tractors. The ones he has right now that are done will be getting loaded up to go to Abernathy on the 29th for an auction.
