New information has been released regarding the remains of a body found on the outskirts of Sweetwater. Discovered last week by TxDOT workers not far from the Lubbock US 84 split, Sweetwater Police Department reported the body found is that of an adult male, age and race still not determined, but after hours of detectives and Texas rangers mapping the area and collecting evidence, Chief Brian Frieda said hair was found that, due to graying, he thinks could be consistent with someone between 40 and 60 years of age.
The remains were initially sent to the Lubbock County Medical Examiner, who believed it was in state of decomposition ranging from 1-2 months. It is now being transported to a forensic anthropologist with the University of North Texas, who will extract DNA and determine cause of death.
The body was not buried, merely dumped in the tall grass. TxDOT said it's reduced the number of times it mows the median and shoulder areas of the highway, which is why the body was not found earlier.
