Friday LPD investigators will be mapping the scene of Sunday's fatal collision off of the Slaton Highway near Southeast Drive.

As their investigation continues, they are learning more about the young woman killed in that head-on crash. According to the Houston Chronicle, 27-year-old Laura Beth Botkin was a well known opera singer and voice coach within Houston's performing arts community. Investigators said they were returning from a trip to the Grand Canyon when a pickup going the wrong way on the Slaton highway collided with the car in which she was a passenger.

Police said both vehicles swerved in the same direction onto the median, in an attempt to avoid hitting each other.

The driver of the car, 26-year-old Jonathan Runnels of Pasadena, has been released from the hospital. The driver of the pickup truck, 35-year-old Jose Marmolejo Jr. of Slaton, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
