A funeral is scheduled Wednesday for a Panhandle high school freshman athlete who died nine days after a flying discus hit him in the hip.
A statement issued Monday by the Hereford Independent School District says 15-year-old Joshua Ramirez died Sunday afternoon at Hereford Regional Medical Center.
Officials say Ramirez was stretching for an event in Plainview on March 8 when the discus hit him. A district athletic trainer advised him to treat it with ice and report any worsening.
The boy's uncle says Ramirez went to the hospital for a follow up exam March 10 and reported that his pain was worsening.
He was admitted into an intensive care unit and died Sunday afternoon.
The incident is being investigated.
