An article in the Dallas Morning News questions the 2007 sale of some Governor Perry's land holdings in the Hill Country.

The paper claims the governor made a handsome profit based solely on his political position.

Perry counters that the Horseshoe Bay property sold below market value, and defends the profits earned.

"Everything that I have ever done has been reported on extensively in the public and they have been open, honest at arms length. The idea that you're supposed to go get an ethics report when you buy a piece of property might be a bit cumbersome for elected officials," Perry said.

"I understand newspapers have to sell newsprint and they're going to have all kinds of stories, but at the end of the day, Texans know that what we have created over the last decade in the state is the greatest economy in america and they would rather live in Texas than any other state in America and we're going to keep it that way." Perry said. "That's my pledge to the people of the state of Texas. If you like what we have and what we've created here in the last 10 years, you're gonna love the next four. God bless."

Perry's opponent, Bill White, prefers the Dallas paper's version. His spokeswoman said this in a statement:

"When will he [Perry] get his story straight on ethics? Does he expect Texans to believe it's a coincidence he appointed the two people who helped him with unethical land deals to university boards? Time and time again we see Rick Perry's friends take care of him, and so he takes care of them, just like a typical career politician."
