Todrick Hall's auditioning for "American Idol" makes sense. Frankly, it's a wonder it hasn't happened before now.

He's been busy, though.

A native of Plainview and a product of Ballet Lubbock, Hall went to Broadway where he was a cast member in the Oprah Winfrey-produced "The Color Purple."

Back in 2008, Hall debuted his original play on a Lubbock stage called "OZ the Musical." It's a modern-day urban treatment of L. Frank Baum's "The Wizard of Oz." The musical features more than a dozen original songs and choreography Hall says he started developing as a teenager.

Hall has long been an "American Idol" fan, so he hand-picked four of his favorite past "Idol" contestants and offered them parts in the original run. To see the original FOX 34 News story on the play's premier in August 2008, click the video on the upper right side of this page.

Since then, Hall has taken his musical on the road. In each city he visits he holds auditions for local kids to give them a chance to be munchkins in the production. He personally instructs them in the new choreography. He was in Lubbock again with the show as recently as October.

Perhaps it was all that time spent with former "Idol" contestants that gave Hall the itch to audition himself.

Regardless, he did in fact make it in front of the judges' panel to sing for Randy, Kara and Simon. You can see a brief clip of his audition here.

Hall is restricted from talking to the media about "Idol" but we'll know tonight whether he got the coveted Golden Ticket.

If he does move on in the competition, we likely won't see him again until Feb. 9, which is the first round of Hollywood competition.

It's all speculation at this point, but we do know he has the musical theater experience that's worked so well for past contestants like Adam Lambert.

You can keep up with "American Idol" Tuesday and Wednesday nights at seven on FOX 34.

Stay tuned.
