Thunderstorms Wednesday brought welcome rain but also some severe weather Wednesday afternoon and evening.
A tornado touched down a couple miles northwest of Sundown, in southwestern Hockley County. This is about 30 miles southwest of Lubbock.
Our news crew found damage to a building and the surrounding property west of Samson Post Road on FM 1585. Law enforcement tells us this is where the funnel touched down. The storm also produced up to 3"-diameter hail just northeast of this point. The hail was much smaller by the time the storm moved through Levelland. Lyntegar Electric report six utility poles were downed in Hockley County around 5:45.

There was also golf ball-size hail reported in Lamesa and at least 1" diameter hail through Muleshoe.
The storms quickly faded in severity but continued to drop heavy rain as they marched east across the area, including through Lubbock. Earlier in the day a line of storms produced torrential rain northeast of Lubbock, around Caprock Canyons State Park. Parts of the park were flooded with around 4" of rain.
