twitterI know, saying it's hot in June in Texas isn't exactly a startling forecast. And I also am not a fan of national news stories that run this time of year, pretty much every year, from the whatever part of the nation that's hot -- "and we're still weeks away from the official start of summer".
It's true the summer solstice on June 20-21 marks the longest day of sunlight and the start of the North American summer. But for our weather you know well it's hot here June through August.
May 30 the average high temp, based on records here from 1971 to 2000, is 87 degrees. The average high jumps to a range of 91 to 92 from June 17 through August 14. August 21 is the first time moving out of the summer where the 30-year average high is out of the 90s, at 89.
You can see the hottest days, on average, run late June through mid August but it's not like early June is an icebox here.
The hottest day on record since 1911 is June 27, 1994 when the thermometer at Lubbock's airport reached 114.
June is, on average, our wettest month:
Jan. 0.50"
Feb. 0.71"
March 0.76"
April 1.29
May 2.31"
June 2.98"
July 2.13"
Aug. 2.36"
Sept.2.57"
Oct. 1.70"
Nov. 0.71"
Dec. 0.67"
These numbers give us benchmarks. Unfortunately, this year's tallies wind up at the bottom end of the precip list.
