The devastating May 11th, 1970 tornado in Lubbock

Many lessons were learned from that powerful twister about the importance of emergency preparedness.

Doyce Ewing with the Lubbock Fire Department says the city has a detailed plan of action and so should you.

left hundreds of families homeless and killed 26 people.

Ewing told FOX 34 every family needs "a family escape plan, a family meeting place. Someplace where not just your immediate family, but some place where your extended family, maybe your mother or father or maybe your aunts or uncles, need to know that you're okay."

Being alert for any kind of weather warnings and having emergency supplies ready at all times is also important, especially for wildfires right now.

we've posted a link on our website to some preparedness recommendations from the state. Just look under the "Seen on FOX 34" tab at the top left of the page.
