We saw some near record warmth across the South Plains today, with the record high being 78°, and Lubbock officially topping out at 76°.
A cold front moves through this evening and effectively cuts out the strong winds and shifts them to the north. Temperatures will be significantly cooler Saturday morning than the past couple of mornings as we start off in the mid to upper 20s. We warm to the low to mid 60s by Saturday afternoon with winds shifting to the south and becoming breezy, about 10-20mph.
Winds will start to increase in strength Saturday night and will become very strong on Sunday. Right now it looks like we could see sustained winds upwards of 30mph with gusts in excess of 50mph. These strong winds will likely blow dirt and dust around and will again raise the concern for fire danger. Below is a graphic showing the current wind speed and direction.
Our next potential rain producing storm system looks to move through next week Tuesday and Wednesday. Some models continue to hint at a slight chance of rain with this system, but confidence is still not that high, so right now we are just giving us a 20% chance.
I hope you have a great weekend! Enjoy the weather on Saturday and please avoid doing anything that could cause a fire on Sunday. Chase will update you on the strong winds Sunday and the potential for rain next week over the weekend.
