DRY AIR TODAY: A few isolated storms developed across the southern Panhandle last night, but more widespread rain stayed much farther north. The west wind is beginning to pick up. The west breeze at 15-25mph today will push that dry air into the area, leading to a mostly sunny afternoon, high in the lower 80s.

THIS EVENING: The wind will gradually back off tonight, kickoff for the Friday night football games in the low 70s...falling to the upper 50s late, wind gradually backing off.

TOMORROW: It'll be a cool start if you're going to be tailgating for the Tech game, low in the mid 40s. Tomorrow's high in the low 80s with clouds gradually increasing through the afternoon.

The wind will become more E/SE by tomorrow night, working to significantly increase the moisture in the air. An isolated shower is possible late tomorrow, though the chance is low.

BETTER RAIN SETUP: Sunday into Monday is our focus for scattered showers and thunderstorms. The next upper-level storm system will swing across the western United States, promoting the lift in the atmosphere here...especially Sunday night. Some heavy downpours will be possible late Sunday into Monday morning. The rain chance should fade by Monday afternoon, high both days in the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: A cold front will move through Tuesday, knocking the high down into the 60s Tuesday and Wednesday with a gusty north wind Tuesday. A freeze will be possible northwest of Lubbock mid to late next week. The European model is showing a setup for some rain Wednesday, though the American GFS model is dry right now. Another storm system may develop out west next weekend, which could bring another shot at rain.

Have a great weekend and Go Tech! Rudy will have an update to the forecast later this afternoon. I'll be out next week, heading to the National Weather Association annual meeting. Caitlin will be filling in for me next week.
