THIS MORNING: It's a partly cloudy, warm and humid morning here...with thunderstorms moving east up along I-40. A severe thunderstorm watch continues north of our area, for the Panhandle and western Oklahoma until 8 a.m. We could see a few sprinkles north of the city next few hours.
TODAY: Hot, humid and breezy...high near 96 in Lubbock, wind S-SE 15-25mph. There should be some thunderstorms developing by late afternoon into this evening. The number of storms may be limited, so the chance for storms isn't great. One factor we're watching is the wind has shifted out of the north for locations along and north of U.S. 70 this morning. This is an outflow boundary kicked out by those storms to the north. These boundaries can be areas to watch for storm development later.
While the chance for storms isn't great, where storms develop they could turn severe with 65+mph gusts and hail larger than 1" diameter. This is the Storm Prediction Center outlook for today, showing severe risk in yellow:
TOMORROW: The chance for thunderstorms is better. And where storms develop today will influence where the best small-scale features are in place for storm development. There could be a few isolated shower or storms during the afternoon, the better chance is tomorrow evening through early Sunday morning. SPC has all of our area highlighted with the risk for severe storms tomorrow:
EXTENDED OUTLOOK: A few more showers or thunderstorms are possible Sunday and Monday. But until we get through today and tomorrow, we won't know the small-scale details to see if our area will have a good chance. It'll turn hotter middle of next week with more sun.
TEXAS TECH BASEBALL: The weather still looks good at Dan Law Field at game time through this weekend. Each day a shower or storm is possible. But I think tomorrow the greater risk for storms will hold off until the evening/night. And right now it looks the same Sunday and Monday. I'll be posting updates on twitter @matternst34 around each game time. Guns Up for the Red Raiders.
Rudy will have the next update to this forecast later today. Have a great weekend and stay updated on the weather.
