It sure was nice to see some rain across the South Plains last night and the good news is we have several more chances to see more rain this week. Those chances start again this evening as we are watching for the potential for some showers and storms to form around the I-27/US87 Corridor and then push east this evening. These will mainly be high based storms meaning that most of the rain they produce will not reach the ground and they also will have the potential to produce strong wind gusts. You can watch all of this activity form and move with our live streaming radar below.
Any showers and storms that form this evening will end overnight and we will start off tomorrow on a mild note with temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s. A dryline will push through the area and setup to the east of Lubbock giving those of us on the Caprock breezy and dry conditions. To the east of the dryline, so essentially out across the Rolling Plains, there will be another chance for showers and storms to form. These storms will have the potential to quickly become severe producing large hail and strong damaging wind gusts. For this very reason the Storm Prediction Center has highlighted an area under their Slight Risk for Severe Weather which goes as far west as Childress and Paducah and then extends farther east. That risk can be seen in the graphics below.

A cold front will move into the area sometime on Thursday. There still is some uncertainty not only on when the front will arrive but also how far south it will push. This front won’t cool us down all that much but it along with an upper-level disturbance will provide us with more chances for rain and storms. Right now it looks like just a slight chance on Thursday with a better chance on Friday, especially late Friday into early Saturday. Nothing is a foregone conclusion but it is nice to have continued chances for rain into the weekend.

It looks like we will dry out and warm back into the 80s at the beginning of next week. Models hint at another system that could possibly bring us rain towards the middle to end of next week but for now we are just going to focus on our rain chances this week. We are entering what is typically the most active time of the year for us which is the end of May into the beginning of June.

I will update you on any rain and storms tonight on the News at Nine and Matt will have the updated thinking on our chances for more rain the rest of the week early tomorrow morning.
