We started off February with afternoon temperatures that you might expect at the end of March and beginning of April.
We will stay unseasonably warm Thursday with moisture increasing across the region on breezy southeasterly winds, setting the stage for slight chances of rain and storms. We could start to see activity develop late Thursday afternoon/evening, but right now the timing for most storm development looks to be around midnight. After storms form, they will push to the east and eventually move out of our area by Friday morning. Activity looks to stay to the east of Lubbock, and increase in coverage and intensity the farther east it moves. Once storms move off the Caprock and across the Rolling Plains they could become severe with the main threats being large hail and strong damaging winds. The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted this area under a Slight Risk for Severe Weather.

A fairly strong cold front will move through Friday, ushering in breezy north winds and cooler air. Afternoon temperatures look to stay in the low 50s through the weekend and beginning of next week while we stay under mostly sunny skies.
Stay tuned as we continue to fine tune our forecast leading up to this event. I will give you the latest details tonight on the News at Nine and Matt will update you tomorrow morning on Good Day Lubbock.

** Thursday is Groundhog Day. According to the tradition, if Punxsutawney Phil (the name of the groundhog) sees his shadow and returns to his burrow, that means we will have 6 more weeks of Winter, and if he doesn’t see his shadow and stays outside then Winter is over. With the unseasonably warm Winter that the nation has had so far this year, many people will be saying that Winter hasn’t even started yet! **
