LUBBOCK, Texas - A quick strike in the 15th minute of play was all the Red Raiders needed Friday night as Texas Tech topped Kansas 1-0 at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
With the victory, the No. 18 Red Raiders improve to 14-1-2 on the season and remain unbeaten in Big 12 play moving to 4-0-2 against conference foes. The Red Raiders have now shutout nine of their last 11 opponents while extending their unbeaten streak to 13-straight.
"We came right out of the gates," Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "Our best defense tonight was that we kept attacking."
Tech sophomore Janine Beckie provided the lone goal of the match putting the Red Raiders on top with a strike from near the right corner of the penalty box. The game-winner marked her team-leading seventh goal of the season, and first since Tech's win over UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 22.
"I thought she [Kansas defender] was actually going to block my shot," Beckie said. "So I hit it harder than I would have if I had time. I didn't actually think it was going to go in, but it went in right over her hand."
The 2012 All-American now has four game-winners on the season and nine in her career. The Highlands Ranch, Colo. native paced the Tech offense on Friday night with five shots, three of which were on target.
Tech took the 1-0 lead into halftime, and didn't look back as senior goalkeeper Victoria Esson made four saves in front of the net. With the performance, Esson posted shutout number 11 for the season pushing her career total to a program-leading 25.
The Red Raiders had a handful of opportunities to extend the one-goal lead including a header chance by sophomore Hannah Devine off a corner by teammate Alli Murphy. Devine's leaping effort came just 10 minutes into the second half and deflected off the Kansas post.
Esson went on to make two more saves in the second half including a leaping effort on a shot by Kansas' Caroline Kastor in the 63rd minute.
Texas Tech continues its three-match homestand Sunday with a primetime showdown with regular season conference champion West Virginia at the John Walker Soccer Complex. First kick is set for 6 p.m.
