Red Raiders Shut Down By Houston 9-0

HOUSTON, Texas –Texas Tech saw its eight-game win streak come to an end with a 9-0 shutout loss to Houston on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Houston College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
 
The No. 26 ranked Red Raiders drop to 8-2 on the season while suffering its second shutout of the season. Houston stays perfect on the season with an 8-0 record while receiving a dominating pitching performance from Aaron Garza (3-0), who nearly finished the complete-game shutout going 8.2 innings with seven strikeouts allowing six base hits – three of which stayed in the infield.
 
Tech starting pitcher Dominic Moreno (0-2) took the loss allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. Moreno didn’t issue a walk in the start but did hit a career-high three batters.
 
The Red Raiders had six players finish with a hit in the game, including senior right fielder Adam Kirsch (1-for-3) who extended his hit streak to nine games with a single up the middle during his last at-bat in the seventh inning.
 
Tech also had base hits from third baseman Jake Barrios, first baseman Eric Gutierrez, pinch hitter Alec Humphreys, shortstop Ryan Long and center fielder Zach Davis.
 
Tech used four relief pitchers that combined allowed eight runs on five hits with four walks and just two strikeouts.
 
Houston finished with 10 base hits, including a 3-for-4 performance from Jacob Lueneburg who also led the way for the Cougars with three RBI. Houston nine-hole batter and center fielder Ashford Fulmer went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run which marked Houston’s final runs of the game.
 
The Cougars scored a run in the first inning off Moreno with an infield base hit and then an RBI double by first baseman Casey Grayson scored the first run of the game.
 
Houston’s big inning came in the seventh when they plated eight runs while sending 11 batters to the plate who tallied four base hits and had four walks.
 
Texas Tech will continue play at the Houston College Classic on Saturday, Mar. 1 with a 12:05 p.m. first pitch against Sam Houston State at Minute Maid Park. The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Houston. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Withrow (1-0, 0.90 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Red Raiders while junior left-handed pitcher Andrew Godail (2-0, 1.69 ERA) will get the start for the Bearkats.
