LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech swept the Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week awards today as sophomore forward Janine Beckie and senior goalkeeper Victoria Esson were honored by the Conference.
The pair helped guide the Red Raiders (15-1-2, 5-0-2 Big 12) to a pair of victories this weekend over each Kansas and No. 9 West Virginia. It marks the second time this season the pair have swept the two honors.
Beckie, who earns her fourth career Big 12 Player of the Week honor, scored in back-to-back matches this weekend including the Red Raiders' game-winner against Kansas Friday. She then scored again in the second half of Tech's 2-0 shutout of the Mountaineers Sunday pushing her season total to eight goals.
Meanwhile, Esson posted shutouts in each of the Red Raiders' two victories pushing her season total to a league-leading 12. Esson made a combined eight saves in front of the net, and has allowed just one goal in her last seven games in front of the Tech goal.
The senior from Christchurch, New Zealand now has a school record 26 shutouts in her decorated career as the anchor of Texas Tech's defense which ranks No. 1 nationally in both goals-against average and shutout percentage.
Tech hosts Texas Friday at 7 p.m. in the regular season finale at the John Walker Soccer Complex. All fans are encouraged to wear red in what has been declared the Code Red Game. The first 350 fans at the John Walker Soccer Complex will receive a free red Texas Tech Athletics shirt.
