Matt Ernst is chief meteorologist at FOX 34. Watch Good Day Lubbock weekday mornings 5:30 to 9 for the latest weather forecast and perhaps a few bad jokes. He's also anchor of Ag Day Lubbock, weekday mornings at 5 on FOX 34. It's the only local daily agricultural newscast of its type in the nation.
You can listen to Matt's news and weather updates weekday mornings and afternoons on FOX Talk 950-100.7FM. Matt's radio updates are also heard on
Magic 93.7,
97-3 YES!FM,
Double T 104-3 and
107.7 The Eagle.
Matt joined the FOX 34 team in 2006. He first hit the Lubbock airwaves at the then-student-run KTXT-FM. Matt also anchored newscasts and produced shows at radio stations KFYO and KKAM. He interned in the weather department at KLBK/KAMC.
Matt is an alumnus of Texas Tech University, with a degree in broadcast journalism, atmospheric science minor. He holds the broadcast meteorology certificate from Mississippi State University. The Bulldogs were three-time national champions of a national forecasting competition among the nation's top weather schools, before Penn State most recently took the title. Yes, only weather geeks care about a competition like this.
Matt has gained first-hand knowledge of South Plains severe weather as a trained storm spotter. In June 2005 he observed
several tornadoes across the eastern FOX 34 viewing area. He's a true weather nerd, following the weather, its technology, research and anything else connected both while at "work" and away.
A proud Red Raider, Matt is a member of the Texas Tech Alumni Association. He's a native Texan, previously living in San Antonio and neighboring town La Vernia. He is an active member of the National Weather Association and a board member of the local chapter of the National Weather Service's Storm Ready program. He's a United Way volunteer, working on this year's campaign.
He married wife Taylor in 2010. She's an art teacher in Lubbock ISD. They have a cat, Maeby.
