If you are thinking about clean eating in the new year but have no idea where to start, there are free resources for help right here in Lubbock.
Simply turn a corner at Natural Grocers and you might run into Rachelle Atkinson, the store's nutritional health coach.
"So Natural Grocers, one of their founding principles is nutrition education and free nutrition education for the public," she said.
Having studied holistic nutrition, Atkinson is all about healing the body through food. And she is the go-to-gal for several free community services, including personal consultations.
"So it's an hour long consultation, and we spend the first 20 minutes gathering a health history and your typical health intake. And the last part of the session, addressing your particular health concerns and how they may be addressed through nutrition."
People diagnosed with prediabetes, or even those wanting to make a change for the new year, may be good candidates for this type of one on one session. It is only available by appointment.
"I'm also available to help customers shop. I can do store tours just to become familiar on how to change our shopping habits."
The next free service is nutrition education classes held in the store's demonstration kitchen. They are first come, first serve, but the room can hold up to 60 people.
"They are an hour-and-half long. They will be a different theme, topic or message each time."
Atkinson's next class on January 19th discusses sugar cravings, weight gain and blood sugar. Then on February 2nd, a class called the primal smoothie covers healthy food on-the-go.
She's also available to visit businesses or groups on-location.
"Any business can call me that wants to provide some type of nutritional service for their employees."
When she is not teaching a class or holding a consultation, Atkinson is available to help answer shopper's questions.
