At just 2-years-old, a little girl from Post has had a remarkable turnaround following a leukemia diagnosis this past May.
Kerstyn Young is energetic and in remission, and it only took 28 days to get her there.
She met us with her mother, Jodye, at Maxey park for a play-date interview. Kerstyn seemed like any other tot, running and swinging about. The reality is, she has spent a lot of time at Covenant Women's and Children's across the street after falling ill a few months ago.
"She just kept having ear infection after ear infection and it wouldn't go away. Her doctor was just completely baffled," Jodye said.
Then at the end of May, a startling symptom led doctors to the cancer diagnosis.
"She went to bed to take a nap and when she woke up, there were bruises, little purple bruises all over her body."
Jodye said the cancer cells in Kerstyn's bone marrow were at 88 percent.
"And July the 3rd, she was cancer free. So in just 28 days she went from 88 percent cancer cells to zero."
A few short months later, Kerstyn is in remission and undergoing chemotherapy treatments to prevent the cancer from coming back.
"Now this is who she was before all of this happened. So we're glad to have her back."
Jodye said because Kerstyn's cancer was out of her control, she relied on her faith to help get her through. Establishing a support system helped her stay strong and optimistic.
"I've met people who are going through the same thing on Facebook. I've joined group to talk about it because (everyone) doesn't understand it unless they're going through it. I didn't understand it before it happened, and now I do. It's nice to get to talk to somebody that does understand."
The family has decided to be a part of this years CureSearch walk in September. They are leading a team called Kerstyn's Journey. Proceeds from the event go to supporting pediatric cancer research.Click here for more information and to register for the event.
Young said she would be glad to talk to any parent that is going through a similar situation. Those interested can connect with the family on Facebook by liking the page, Kerstyn's Journey
