Some kids are spending their summer out in the sun, but not by the pool. They're spending hours sweating in costumes, singing and dancing on an outdoor stage rehearsing for this weekend's first performances of "Oliver!" for Moonlight Musicals.
The 1968 musical by Lionel Bart is based on the Charles Dickens novel "Oliver Twist," and it's a longtime favorite of director Yvonne Racz-Key.
"I grew up with this musical, so I've known it for so long that it came natural to me," she said.
Racz-Key is the Artistic Director for Ballet Lubbock and she's taking her first shot at directing a play with actors...
"It's definitely a challenge because you're not speaking the ballet language - you're speaking to actors," she said. "And some of them are natural movers and some of them aren't. it has all kinds of challenges, but with that there's great expectations and surprises on the way.
The musical is being staged at the Wells Fargo Amphitheater, which features roomy stadium seating perfect for picnics with the beautiful Mackenzie Park as the backdrop.
