"Her" is a beautiful movie in every way - from the script to the performances to what appears on the screen.
Set in a future that looks believably close to our world, Joaquin Phoenix is Theodore, a lonely man on the precipice of divorce who falls in love with his new operating system named Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johannson.
I know. It's a goofy premise that sounds like a bad Adam Sandler movie (redundant?). That's why the Oscar winning screenplay by director Spike Jonze is so brilliant: he's able to take a silly idea and use it to explore the depths of the human psyche.
Jonze isn't simply satirizing our growing obsession with technology. That's too easy, and merely scratching the surface. This is about the need for relationships.
Phoenix is mesmerizing, and it's even more impressive when you consider how much time he spends alone on screen.
"Her" is science fiction with a lot of truth.
