"Contraband" finds Mark Wahlberg in tough guy mode, which is what he tends to do best. He's a professional smuggler who's been out of the game for a while, but gets dragged back in when his screw-up brother-in-law gets indebted to a drug dealer, played by Giovanni Ribisi.
Wahlberg and Ribisi have a violent clash on their first meeting, and you'd think after a run-in like that you'd make sure to protect your wife and kids. Instead, Wahlberg heads to Panama to score some counterfeit money to pay off the debt his brother in law owes, leaving his family open to attack.
The movie's full of dumb decisions like that, and poor Kate Beckinsale is resigned to being a pretty punching bag.
But "Contraband" still intensely entertaining with several twists and close calls. You might not remember the film a few months from now, but it goes down very nicely with popcorn.
