A FOX34 followup on the status of the Garza Theatre and the impact on the theater scene in Post.
The nearly 100 year-old city-owned building is showing its age in all the wrong places.
According to a recent inspection by an engineering firm. Citing safety concerns, on Tuesday the city ordered the Garza Theatre closed until further notice.
City Manager Arbie Taylor says as important as the Garza Theatre is to Post and to the arts community public safety is paramount.
"The chief problem is the structural integrity of the roof, but there were also issues with ADA compliance, which is the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is out of compliance with the ADA and being a public building, it has to be in compliance. There were also fire issues," said Taylor.
Taylor adds the estimated cost for required improvements tops $1.5 million. The Post City Council will formally discuss options for solutions to the problems next month.
