There are 52 first-run movie screens in Lubbock, which means there's plenty of room to host a load of new releases that are on the way from now through Christmas Day.

Here's the list of confirmed release dates and where they're playing:

Opening Wednesday:

"Monsters, Inc. 3D"
Movies 16
Tinseltown USA

Another Pixar classic that's had 3D effects added to it so Disney can cash in a bit more on old product. Hey, it worked for "Finding Nemo" a few months ago. And I still really like "Monsters," and wonder if the upcoming prequel will bring the magic back to Pixar that's been missing for a couple years.

"The Guilt Trip"
Movies 16
Tinseltown USA

The first of two comedies about annoying parents due out in the next week. This one finds Seth Rogen going on a road trip with his mom, Barbra Streisand. The trailers have have made me laugh.

Opening Friday:

"This is 40"
Premiere Cinemas
Tinseltown USA

This is being billed as the "sort of sequel to "Knocked Up." Writer and director Judd Apatow brings back the married couple from the movie, played by the terrific Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann, to see how their relationship and family progresses into middle age. I expect very good things from this R-rated comedy.

"Jack Reacher"
Movies 16
Tinseltown USA

Tom Cruise, who I've praised in this very blog many times, plays the military investigator found in a book series by Lee Child, which I've not read. To me, the trailers look like Cruise wants his own Bourne series to go with his "Mission: Impossible" series, which I guess is fine.

"Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away"
Premiere Cinemas

If you've never seen a "Cirque" performance, this will be an impressive 3D presentation. It's not a documentary - it's a fantasy movie set in the world of "Cirque" - written and directed by Andrew Adamson, who's responsible for the "Narnia" and "Shrek" movies.

Opening Christmas Day:

"Silver Linings Playbook"
Premiere Cinemas
Tinseltown USA (not finalized)

A film festival favorite and definite Oscar contender, this romantic drama is directed by David O. Russell ("The Fighter," "I Heart Huckabees") and stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper as tortured souls who connect.

"Les Miserables"
Movies 16
Tinseltown USA (not finalized)

Based on the Broadway musical, which just happens to be my all-time favorite. This won't be like the 1998 version with Liam Neeson, which I like very much. This new one is the full musical version, with director Tom Hooper requiring his actors to sing live, instead of dubbing it over. The impressive cast includes Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried.

"Django Unchained"
Movies 16
Tinseltown USA (not finalized)

After he killed Hitler in "Inglourious Basterds," Quentin Tarantino is messing with history again, telling the story of a slave (Jaime Foxx) on a mission of revenge against a brutal plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio) who has his wife held captive. It'll be a mash-up of spaghetti western and blaxploitation genres, which looks great.

"Parental Guidance"
Tinseltown USA
Premiere Cinemas

The other comedy about annoying parents. This one finds Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as grandparents who agree to babysit their three grandkids, and - get this - the old folks are out of touch with what kids are into these days. I like Crystal so much, but the trailers look painful.

There are at least three movies listed here that I've been salivating to watch. How about you?
