Start making plans for the production of "Les Miserables" in Lubbock. The cast is in rehearsals right now for the four performances November 21-24 at the Civic Center Theater. It's a teaming of the Lubbock Moonlight Musicals and the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra.
Even if you saw the movie last year, this will be an entirely different experience. Director Bill Gelber is making sure of that because he
hasn't even seen the movie.
"I would rather not have other people's ideas because I don't have that cast or those resources," Gelber said. "I'd rather go in with the people I have, see what we come up with and try to tell the story as clearly as I can."
That shouldn't be a problem - his cast is impeccable with Broadway veteran David Gaschen as Jean Valjean, Texas Tech, Gerald Dolter as Inspector Javert, and Rebecca Saathoff Davis as Cosette.
Gelber is using stand-ins and understudies for Gaschen and Davis, who will join rehearsals in the coming weeks. But the director says his understudies are talented and could easily play these roles in future professional productions.
The sheer amount of talent loaded into this production should be very impressive.
The production is being produced in the perfect window of time - with tours halted last year and a Broadway revival set for next year.Get tickets here
