Texas Tech also revealed the new name for the horse affectionately called "Woody" as Fearless Champion. The previous horse Midnight Matador was retired during the middle of the 2012 football season due to leg injuries. Fearless Champion is of course solid black in color and is an eight-year-old Quarter Horse. Ashley Wenzel, the previous Masked Rider rode Woody through his first football game at the Meineke Car Care Bowl December 28. And it was a bitter sweat moment for Wenzel as she passed the dark rider tradition over to Waggoner.
"He is definitely somebody that I can trust is going to continue this program well," Wenzel said. "And I can trust that no matter what happens under his reign that he's going to be able to handle it and keep a smile on his face all the time. I'm excited to see what this year has to offer."
Corey Waggoner is a junior Animal Science major born and raised right here in Lubbock. He's a part of the Masked Rider family already as a member of the field safety team. He said that he looks forward to spreading school spirit in the year ahead and representing Texas Tech at different appearances and sporting events.
